About Us

In 1897 Shearer Candles was founded by a Mr. Shearer and a Mr. Harvey, who built a candle factory on the outskirts of Glasgow City. Shearer and Harvey had previously worked as chandlers in the Candleriggs district of Glasgow, the centre of candle making in the city. The last of the Shearers retired in the 1970s and the present owners, the Barnet Family, became involved in 1972 and are now in the second generation of management. Our chairman, Ian Barnet, began making candles in 1972.

Shearer Candles is recognised as a leading innovator in the fashionable and design-conscious world of candles. With hundreds of customers in a variety of sectors including leading retailers, hotels, restaurants, supermarket chains and department stores, as well as consumers, Shearer Candles prides itself on delivering bespoke high quality candles that contain only the purest and finest ingredients.

Membership and Awards 

Shearer Candles are proud to be members of The British Candlemakers Federation. The British Candlemakers Federation represents candle manufacturers in the U.K. Membership of the Federation ensures that our manufacturing processes maintain the exceptionally high technical and legal standards set by both the European Union and the UK candle industry.

Shearer Candles are also members of The Giftware Association, the trade association for the UK gift and home industry. We are also members of Sedex; a not for profit membership organisation dedicated to driving improvements in responsible and ethical business practices in global supply chains.

The wax used in our candles is of the very best standard.  It has a RAL quality mark, ensuring the visible sign of quality approved candles.

We have recently become a member of The Glasgow City Marketing Bureau who are the official destination marketing organisation (DMO) for metropolitan Glasgow.  They manage Glasgow: Scotland with style; attracting, managing and marketing conventions and major events; conference and event accommodation bookings; public relations and creating inward investment.

Shearer Candles is also a member of ACE.  The Association for Cultural Enterprises promotes commercial best practice in the cultural, heritage and visitor attraction sector by providing training and networking opportunities and facilitating the sharing of information and experience between its members.

Shearer Candles recently joined the Garden Centre Association which provides support and benefits to the UK’s most progressive garden centres and their key suppliers - Promoting; “better standards, better business.'
